Meet Carl Sprayberry
Candidate for State House District 139
Carl Sprayberry, born June 3rd, 1992, is a Columbus native, having lived here his entire life. He ran for state house in 2020 against long-time incumbent Richard Smith, who passed away in office earlier this year. He ran on wanting to expand Medicare in Georgia, expand renewable energy in the state, and providing economic relief to people and businesses during the height of the COVID pandemic. Unfortunately, despite being the first challenger to Richard Smith since Richard Smith’s first election to the state house and managing to secure support from nearly 10,000 residents of then-state house district 134, Carl lost as voters sent Richard Smith back to the state house where he served until his passing on January 30th, 2024.
In 2022, Carl tried his hand at running for the Columbus city council seeking to target the gang violence which had grown rampant from 2018 and the idea of re-envisioning the city’s transit through the establishment of bike lanes and improved walkability. Though he may have lost that race, many of Carl’s ideas were implemented by the city council with the reestablishment of the city’s gang task force and the beginning of a biking network beyond the RiverWalk and Fall Line Trail.
Today...
Carl currently works full-time as a chef at an upscale restaurant in downtown Columbus. He chose to run for this state house district after seeing that no other Democrat was willing to enter the race and give voters a choice. As of writing, Carl has not received any death threats from crazy lunatics, unlike the numerous ones he received during his 2020 run. He is looking to restore sanity to the state legislature and build up a positive future for the state of Georgia as it grows into one of the largest states in the country. He believes the four most important qualities an elected official should have are honesty, transparency, leadership, and professionalism.
Carl is the only candidate in the State House 139 race recognized by Moms Demand Action, an organization dedicated to reducing gun violence founded following the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 children (ages six to seven) and six adult school staff dead.
The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.
